- The XB-70 Valkyrie was the prototype of a nuclear-armed supersonic strategic bomber developed by North American Aviation for the USAF in the late 1950s. This six-engine marvel was capable of flying thousands of miles at 70,000 feet at a cruising speed of Mach 3, making it almost impossible for enemy aircraft to intercept it.
After the introduction of the first surface-to-air missiles and with the advent of intercontinental ballistic missiles, the XB-70 project was abandoned with only two prototypes built and a few test flights.
