- According to legend, long ago, Hercules, the god of Hercules in Greek mythology, and Geryon, the giant of Greek mythology, fought a war that lasted three days and three nights, and Hercules was victorious. In gratitude to Hercules, a lighthouse was built on the spot where they fought, and it was given the name Torre de Hercules. Today, the lighthouse stands on a peninsula on the northern tip of La Coruña, in northwestern Spain, and bears witness to the changes in world history. As early as the second century AD, the ancient Romans built the majestic Lighthouse of Hercules, which has stood tall and still as strong as ever for almost 2,000 years, becoming the only ancient Roman lighthouse still lit and operating. Between 1788 and 1791, the Lighthouse of Hercules underwent extensive repairs, with a height of 55 meters and 242 spiral staircases, as well as exterior decoration in neoclassical style. The Hercules Lighthouse is considered the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world and is the symbol of the city of A Coruña. An ancient Roman lighthouse is engraved in the center of the city's coat of arms. The Hercules Lighthouse was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009.
