Description
Description
- This model of the Deutsche Bahn DR Class 250 was designed and authorized by Brick_trains
- The Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany) Class 250 (known as Deutsche Bahn AG Class 155 since 1992) is a German electric locomotive used in freight trains. Due to its distinctive car body shape, it is nicknamed the “electric container” or “power container”. It was the most powerful locomotive in the former GDR and is still in use today at Deutsche Bahn AG.
- In the mid-1960s it became clear that the 211 and 242 series locomotives, which had been produced since 1961, were not powerful enough, so the DR built a new, 6-axle electric locomotive that was suitable for all classes of traffic. In 1974, three prototypes were built by LEW Hennigsdorf, the leading manufacturer of railway locomotives in the GDR. A series of 270 locomotives were delivered between 1977 and 1984. They were mainly used for heavy freight trains and the DR's fast city express (comparable to InterCity).
- After the reunification of Germany, rail traffic in East Germany collapsed. The locomotives were renumbered to the 155 series and many of them were also in use in West Germany. After the restructuring of Deutsche Bahn, the locomotives for freight transport were assigned to DB Cargo (later Railion, now DB Schenker Rail). Since 1998, some locomotives have been used as spare parts. There are still around 200 examples that are traveling all over Germany, pulling all kinds of freight trains. Even today, the 155s are still indispensable for DB Schenker, Deutsche Bahn's rail freight transport company.
